SUMMARY:How to Marry a Millionaire
DESCRIPTION:HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE was the first Fox film shot in Cinescope\, and a huge success that sent Marilyn’s star catapulting into the stratosphere. She\, Lauren Bacall\, and Betty Grable star as models out to nab rich husbands through many levels of deceit. The gender politics may be old-fashioned but watching the three women show off their comedic chops is a blast. Double Feature with GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES. Screening at various times.

SUMMARY:The Airwaves Belonged to the People: WBCN and The American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The Airwaves Belonged to the People: WBCN and The American Revolution is an award-winning documentary about how a Boston rock radio station became both a participant in and a platform for the anti-war movement\, civil rights\, LGBTQ and women’s rights\, and the explosion of countercultural media in the late 1960s and early 1970s. \nNow re-released under its expanded title\, the film draws on more than 100\,000 archival audio and visual items — much of it donated by the WBCN community — weaving firsthand accounts from station staff with rare material featuring Jane Fonda\, Abbie Hoffman\, Lou Reed\, Jerry Garcia\, and Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith in their first live radio broadcasts. \nThe film aired nationally on PBS and received coverage from major publications including the Boston Globe\, which called it a film audiences “watch with awe.” \nDirected by Peabody Award–winner Bill Lichtenstein\, who began working at WBCN at age 14 in 1970. \nFollowing the screening\, the director will be joined by former WBCN on-air staff for a live Q&A.

SUMMARY:A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
DESCRIPTION:In the 1970s\, Kubrick purchased the rights to Brian Aldiss’ short story “Supertoys Last All Summer Long\,” a Pinocchio-like tale about an android boy in an overpopulated future. After three decades failing to realize the project\, Kubrick offered it to Steven Spielberg\, who jumped at the opportunity and produced one of his most ambitious\, emotionally complex science-fiction films. Kubrick’s biggest obstacle was creating a convincing android boy through available special effects technology\, a problem Spielberg solved by casting Haley Joel Osment as the robot and directing him into a state of placid wonder that lands just to the side of uncanny. Working with cinematographer Janusz Kaminski to cast the film in a fairy tale glow\, Spielberg creates a future society teetering between devastating loneliness and dog-eat-dog lunacy\, where the bittersweet path in the middle is made possible only by a complicated manipulation of audience sympathies between man and machine.

SUMMARY:One-Eyed Jacks (1961)
DESCRIPTION:Long-time bank robbers Rio (Marlon Brando) and Dad (Karl Malden) botch a job in Sonora\, Mexico and find themselves ambushed by Rurales; the latter flees with the loot while the former ends up in prison. Years later\, Rio escapes prison and tracks down Dad\, who’s now a sheriff in Monterey. The setup for Marlon Brando’s lone directorial effort is familiar territory for the western genre\, but as filmed by Brando in Technicolor VistaVision\, this standard revenge plot takes on a quality of Shakespearean tragedy. Assigned first to Stanley Kubrick from a Sam Peckinpah script\, One-Eyed Jacks wears its heart on its sleeve so passionately that it’s hard to imagine it under such a different authorial gaze. Brando’s version\, a swooning Freudian opera set against the white sand and cypress trees of central coast California\, is an enticing hybrid of old-school Hollywood pomp and the personal expressiveness that would define the seventies.

SUMMARY:The Lion in Winter (1968)
DESCRIPTION:In Hepburn’s third Oscar-winning performance\, she plays Eleanor of Aquitaine and goes head-to-head with Peter O’Toole playing King Henry II in 12th century England. It’s all palace intrigue all the time as the King and his estranged wife (released from imprisonment for the Christmas holiday no less) engage in a battle of words over which of their sons will succeed the throne. Though gloriously wordy\, THE LION IN WINTER manages to breathe life into a set of characters mostly known through history books—thanks in no small part to the stupendous performances of Hepburn and O’Toole. \nAdditional showing on 3/16.

SUMMARY:His Girl Friday (1940)
DESCRIPTION:Ace reporter Hildy Johnson wants to forsake journalism for a quiet\, married life in Albany with an insurance salesman\, but she can’t resist covering one last blockbuster story for her editor (and ex-husband) Walter Burns\, who’s determined to win her back—professionally and romantically. Amid the ever-present clacking of typewriters and ringing of telephones\, Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant give virtuoso performances of the film’s rapid-fire dialogue\, delivering more lines in one film than most actors do in an entire career. The greatest of the classic Hollywood “comedies of remarriage\,” His Girl Friday is also a film about how a woman’s place can be the newsroom. \nAdditional showing on 3/20.
