Boston math punks Lane say they’re shedding their mathiness on the latest single “Lane Says” from their upcoming album, “Love is in the Rain,” arriving this fall.

The track title is a nod to Jane’s Addiction – not Lou Reed – but the thematic development of a two-note riff still leaves the listener with a VU-style equation that proves 2 + 2 = 5.

“I’m just trying to make rock music,” guitarist, bassist and singer Wes Kaplan said. “And if I don’t want people to think of math, I’ve got to look to people who are making the stuff that’s effective. There’s an emotional tone and intelligence that a band like Devo is able to sustain – like a performance of stupidity.”

“Lane Says” develops in a near industrial fashion, which is fitting for a band that seeks a utilitarian sound, but can’t quite shed the intricate approach. Guitar and vocal layers take turns building and torching the dyadic motif like an assembly line. “I brought this to the band confident the song had an A-B structure, but everyone heard it as A, B, C, D and so on,” Kaplan said.

The band’s exporting to New York for a showcase at New Colossus this week. “Lane Says” is out anywhere you get your music.
