The late Cambridge author, poet and musician Charles Coe will be honored by the area’s literary and arts community on April 11 across the river in Boston.
Organized by a dedicated group of his closest friends and colleagues, the free celebration will pay tribute to Coe’s immense contributions to the cultural fabric of Massachusetts, filmmaker Roberto Mighty said Sunday.
“Known for his profound poetry, engaging prose and vibrant musical talent, Coe was a towering figure in the local arts scene who mentored emerging writers and touched many lives through his art and advocacy,” Mighty said in an email.
Quoting the organizing committee The Friends of Charles Coe, he said: “Charles was not just a literary giant in our community; he was a beloved friend, a generous mentor and a powerful voice for the arts. This celebration is an opportunity for all of us who loved him and admired his work to come together, share memories and ensure his legacy continues to inspire future generations.”
This event is co-sponsored with The Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture and The Boston Public Library – where it takes place from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St., Copley Square. The afternoon is expected to feature reflections from community leaders and readings of Coe’s work by a lineup of literary figures including Massachusetts poet laureate Regie Gibson; former U.S. poet laureate Robert Pinsky; novelist and MIT professor Helen Elaine Lee; Lloyd Schwartz, poet laureate of the City of Somerville; author and Lesley University professor Elizabeth McKim; and Boston poet laureate Emmanuel Oppong-Yeboah and.
