A renovated outbound Kendall/MIT headhouse reopens to passengers Monday, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said Friday.
Access to red line trains for the past year and 10 months has been through 325 Main St., access that ends as the new headhouse opens for use, the MBTA said.
The headhouse closed June 10, 2024, for $17 million in improvements paid for by the developer BXP – once known as Boston Properties – in coordination with the Cambridge Redevelopment Authority. It has a new glass enclosure with renovated stairs, an escalator and a new glass additional elevator accessible from the street level, the transit agency said in an email.
An “Urban Park Porch,” or landscaped patio, is overhead and open to the public along with the Urban Park Roof Garden that is another flight of stairs away.
The new elevator, the station’s second, is expected to be ready for passenger service in early June,, marking the final phase of headhouse renovations, the MBTA said.
