“The highs have been higher from the lows being lower,” says Cole Triedman of Mozz, whose latest solo EP, “Breadt,” arrives as a heavenly hangover from the Fortuna 500 frontman’s boom-and-bust lifestyle.

“It’s nice to write around stories and characters for a band that’s ultimately there to talk shit and have a good time,” Triedman says. “But I spend my days brooding about my life, so I need some sort of outlet for that.”

Across the EP’s five songs, Triedman is either “brimming with energy” or “totally fucked.” But what sounds like a disconnected binary yields more of a yin-yang dynamic where opposite energies are relative – not absolute.

When Triedman sings “I’m Wide Awake,” you hear springtime just edging out winter with blossoms blooming, birds mating and saplings breaking dirt. It’s not midsummer nirvana. And when he sings “I’m So Tired,” the chorus argues “so I better keep going,” not “I guess I’ll go to sleep.”

For ’Tuna fans, the EP’s a peek behind the curtain at a frontman whose tall tales and brash stage antics would leave you thinking he just sleeps at the venue after everyone goes home. For everyone else, it’s a gateway drug for wanting a bit more from life.
