The reelection campaign of state senator Will Brownsberger was endorsed Thursday by governor Maura Healey, who called his work “a crucial part of so much of our state’s progress in the last decade.”
Brownsberger, whose Suffolk and Middlesex district covers West Cambridge, Belmont, Watertown, Allston, Brighton and Fenway, is Senate president pro tempore and a committee chair who first served as state representative for the 24th Middlesex District from 2007 to 2012, then ran for senator. Brownsberger, 68, has a bachelor’s degree and law degree from Harvard, lives in Belmont and has raised three daughters there with his wife.
He faces his first contested primary since 2011 from a newcomer: Daniel Lander, a 34-year-old aide to Boston mayor Michelle Wu who lives with his husband in the Fenway. He declared his candidacy Dec. 15.
Since launching, Lander said Thursday, “we’ve built a strong grassroots movement. We’ve received the endorsement of IBEW 2222, we’ve raised over $100,000 and hundreds have signed up to volunteer from across the district. Voters are sending a clear message that the status quo on Beacon Hill is broken. We need leaders who will fight the Trump administration and prioritize making Massachusetts more affordable and a better place to live.”
Brownsberger and Healey have worked closely on a number of initiatives, including passage of the Mass Leads Act, which invested $400 million into the AI, climate tech and life sciences sectors, according to a campaign press release. “Their partnership was instrumental in passing the historic $5.2 billion Affordable Homes Act to increase the supply of homes to bring down costs,” the press release said.
“We need him back on Beacon Hill next year,” Healey said via the Brownsberger campaign.
