The Independent Film Festival Boston returns for its 23rd edition April 22-29, screening more than 100 films at the Somerville Theater, The Brattle and Coolidge Corner Theater.

With Hollywood-fueled features such as Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas’ “Power Ballad” alongside local documentary shorts from rising New England filmmakers including Bestor Cram, Tim Jackson, Tim O’Donnell, Sara Robin and Amy Jenkins, the festival leans into being everything to everyone.

Boots Riley will be one of many names appearing in person. The activist, filmmaker and musician will be in the house to screen his latest, “I Love Boosters,” on opening night at the Somerville Theater.

The Independent Film Festival Boston was founded in 2003 to create a space to showcase new talent and celebrate the art of filmmaking. It owes its longevity in no small part to the enthusiasm of its considerable volunteer contingent. More than 200 helping hands will be deployed across the venues during the week of the festival.

In addition to its regular schedule, the festival will team up with the Mass Production Coalition to present the Ninth Annual Student Short Film Showcase, screening works selected by and representing 12 local colleges and universities. The showcase is free and open to the public.

Participating schools include: Lesley University, Tufts University, Boston University, Bridgewater State University, Emerson College, Endicott College, Fitchburg State University, Mass Art, Middlesex Community College, Suffolk University, UMass Lowell and Wheaton College.

Tickets go on sale to IFFBoston members Wednesday and to the general public Thursday. For the schedule and ticket information, visit the IFFBoston website.
