
There are bargains and special dishes at 19 restaurants for Somerville Plant-Based Restaurant Week, from new specialty pizzas, sandwiches and empanadas to buy-one, get-one deals or up to 25 percent off certain foods.
The week is the delicious accompaniment to Somerville becoming the seventh U.S. city to endorse an initiative called the Plant Based Treaty to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by moving away from meat. The City Council adopted the treaty April 9.
The week ends April 25 on Earth Day – and during Earth Month – when “we are all reminded to look at how we can better care for our planet,” said Kimmy Cushman, a campaigner for the treaty, in a press release.
Anyone dining locally knows there are plenty of plant-based offerings already on menus citywide. Koshari Mama, a seller of Egyptian street food on Somerville Avenue, is cited regularly as a top vegan dining destination. “Being a plant-based business owner is about more than serving food – it’s about honoring traditions that have always existed in our cultures,” owner Sahar Ahmed said. “Many of the dishes I grew up with were built from the land: beans, lentils, grains, vegetables, herbs, and spices. Plant-based cooking isn’t new. It’s ancestral.”
“These foods tell stories of resourcefulness and care for the community. They are nourishing, deeply flavorful and often the most affordable way to feed people well. When we cook this way, we show that good food doesn’t have to be exclusive – it can be simple, generous, and shared by everyone,” Ahmed said.
