A new outdoor event series celebrating local arts and culture is coming to Davis Square. It’s called Down in Davis, or DiD for short. The inaugural event on Friday will welcome the country stylings of Tom Hagerty to Statue Park, part of a planned “Alive at Five” performance series.

The “Alive At Five” model aims to give the community a fun, family-friendly place to gather after the typical workday has ended and before night falls. Aidan Rice, one of the community organizers behind DiD, describes the regular Friday events as a way “to kick off the weekend with tunes and good vibes.”

The program is made possible through the efforts of volunteers, the support of sponsors and assistance from the Somerville Foundation. While the series is scheduled through June 26, DiD is canvassing for sponsorships to extend the run.

Though there is a heavy emphasis on music with current bookings, DiD says it’s open to “all types” of live performance. Watch for some curveballs. Future performances to look forward to include Davis Square staples The Dixie Cookbook on May 8, Le Prestige on May 29 and a preview of heavy music festival Somergloom on June 5, featuring Savoir Faire, Gia Greene and Providence, Rhode Island’s Vudu Sister.

How “heavy” will the heavy music be in Statue Park? Says Somergloom organizer Stephen LoVerme, “Gloom is more of a vibe and a feeling than a decibel level.”

Check the vibes yourself at the Somergloom preview and all the DiD events, starting this Friday.
