Giant pitas, the right size for wraps, are back at Foodland, the Cambridge grocer with Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani goods. I was delighted to discover these in the spring of 2025 and, when they ran out, haunted the store for weeks waiting for more to come in. Now I’m dreading that this sensible but all-but-unknown option will disappear again.
The traditional 8-inch pita is a fine size as a pocket for sandwich fillings, but in expanding into wraps too many bread makers move only laterally into lavash and even pocketless pita that are the same 8 inches. The math is that pitas hold a hearty taco’s worth of fillings – when you roll them they don’t expand magically to become burritos; they become essentially taquitos with too much bread.
I tried to call Sunrise, the British Columbian maker of the 12-inch pitas at Foodland, to ask its owners whether they knew they were geniuses – and what leads them to be among the few makers of a product too few people understand they need. (The pita available in 2025 were from a different company.) A bad connection and language barrier foiled that conversation, and who knows, U.S. aggression might foil the local availability of the 12-inch pita. For now, they are $3 for a pack of six at Foodland, 2234 Massachusetts Ave., North Cambridge.
