A three-alarm fire tore through an empty duplex home early Thursday at 8-10 Park St., which is by a commercial district in Somerville’s Ward 2 – immediately behind a Boston Garden cannabis dispensary, across from the Cambria Hotel and Josephine restaurant, and by a Walgreens pharmacy and Conway Park.
The house “has been vacant for some time,” and the cause of the blaze is undetermined and remains under investigation, fire chief Charles Breen said.
Somerville firefighters responded to Park Street at 6:34 a.m. and “encountered heavy fire conditions in the basement and all three upper floors of the house,” Breen said. The fire eventually burned through the roof, which collapsed, and firefighters were forced to evacuate the building when conditions became too unsafe.
Crews put out the fire from outside with mutual aid at the scene supplied by Cambridge, Boston, Chelsea and Medford. Two firefighters taken to the hospital for serious hand injuries, Breen said.
