$4.50 Until recently, I hadn’t spent much time at Assembly Row – it’s a little out of the way for me – but found myself camping out while awaiting the launch of a summer farmers market. That let me try an old favorite for pizza, but I also needed some café time to get work done. Call me basic, but I chose Tatte, where I paid the rent for some workspace with a buttery, flaky boureka, a croissant-style, sesame-topped pastry filled with ricotta and feta. I was happy enough with the choice, especially heated, with its mix of textures and slightly pungent filling. Tatte’s arrival in 2012 was the precursor to a wave of Jewish eateries that crested in 2024, and the boureka is classic Israeli street food (albeit with Turkish origins). This one was good enough to make me eager to sample the competition at Bakey, Lehrhaus and especially Asaro, which builds sandwiches in boureka pastry.
