$2.95 With the menu here offering the delicate meringue sandwich cookies called macarons, as well as chocolates, gelato and pastry such as eclairs, the “fruit paste” jelly cubes may seem like an odd choice to buy, and they were. I was lured by the visual appeal of these colorful, sugar-encrusted cubes of unusual size and imagined there was something secretly special about them. A server said they appealed to customers as something like a nut-free Turkish delight; they are, however, basically like the jellied, sugar-encrusted “fruit slices candy” from a grocery store, where a 7.5-ounce bag goes for $1.79. The mandarin-flavored cube I bought at Le Macaron was fresh and firm, certainly a luxe, more attractive version of the store-bought kind and a fun item to walk out of a store with. But I’m not sure it was better. (You can improve grocery store jellies just by refrigerating them.)
