$4.99 I try every hot chicken sandwich I can here in hopes of matching what Jacob’s Pickles serves in the Moynihan Food Hall at New York’s Penn Station. A train station! But it’s not at Hot Chix, Boston Burger, Krispy Krunchy or the late Lily P’s. (Redbones’ isn’t bad.) After the surprise of a good egg salad sandwich at 7-Eleven, I hoped there would be a low-cost revelation (or at least a guilty pleasure) under the heat lamps of our unpretentious minimarts. Yikes, no: This sandwich, one of four the chain introduced in July, is terrible. It sends a searing chemical burn to the back of the mouth and into the sinuses from the first bite, an unnatural hotness that’s more like dry ice than the cayenne 7-Eleven wants us to credit. The meat feels unfrozen. Which comes first, the chicken or the egg? At 7-Eleven, the chicken’s not even in competition.
