With Thursday’s high heat and humidity continuing over the coming days, the city of Somerville passed along on Thursday a two-day heat advisory from the National Weather Service and tips on staying cool, healthy and safe.
Though Thursday’s 92 degrees may be the actual peak for a while, temperatures will feel like they’re up to 98 degrees, and “the forecasted conditions can cause heat illness if proper precautions are not taken,” said public information officer Victoria MacGregor in a press release.
The release noted:
People without air conditioning can seek relief in air-conditioned city buildings, including public libraries during their regular hours. Seniors are welcome at Council on Aging Senior Centers on weekdays.
The city has public water features running from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at many parks and playgrounds. Sprays are on timers and stop for 20 minutes between cycles. They can be found on the “Stay Cool Outside” section of the city’s Keep Cool webpage. (All splash pads are open with the exception of Lincoln Park.) While the Dilboy pool and Latta Brothers Memorial Pool at Foss Park are not open, their spray decks are.
Safety tips, ways to be a good neighbor and pet owner and how to recognize heat illnesses are listed as well.
