$4 each Argentinian from Che Empanada or African from SamosaMan? Both are at this farmers market. I went with the African, but then had to choose between fillings, from apple to turkey. I went with a steak and potato and a spicy chicken, which made the trip from Dorchester well but aren’t across-the-board culinary revelations. The steak and potato, recommended to me by the seller, was hearty but a bit on the mushy side and not especially flavorful. Go with the chicken: This hand pie was packed to bursting with meat, and while it won’t incite debate about placement on the Scoville scale, did have a good burn to it – sort of a signifier of spice without really making the eater’s eyes water. But that makes sense. The scale’s peppers are mostly South American, and African spices such as ras el hanout or xawaash draw more talk of complexity and boldness than heat.
SamosaMan, noon to 6 p.m. Wednesdays from May through November at the Davis Square Farmers Market, in the city parking lot at 44 Day St., Davis Square, Somerville
